FACILITIES
We offer world class facilities
at The Ice Station. Our ice surface is 30 x 60m with an ice temperature of
-7.2°C.
We have a seating capacity of 1014 and the temperature of the arena is kept
constantly between 12 to 14°C.
To assist in keeping our ice surface in tip top shape, we
make use of two Zamboni 500's with all the latest retrofits carried out.
Our Zamboni's have been named Rex and Stalin, after two very special people who
dedicated much of their lives to the maintenance of our rinks and have witnessed
first hand the progression from resurfacing the ice by hand to the Zamboni
process. This basic process involves the machine’s sharp blade, which
shaves a thin layer of ice as screw conveyors (augers) rotate above the blade to
remove the shavings. The shavings are collected in a large bin, known as the
snow tank. Meanwhile, jets of water clean the ice by flushing dirt and debris
from the remaining grooves in the ice into a vacuum hose. Finally, a towel
spreads the ice-making water (usually warm water), which sprays out of holes at
the back of the machine, leaving behind a smooth sheet of ice.
Blade sharpening:
We have blade sharpening facilities on the premises. Our machines are the
Incredible Edger and Speedy and our sharpeners have all been trained by Sid
Broardbent from the USA who is reputated to be one of the best Sharpening
specialists.
Our rental skates are sharpened on a regular basis to ensure that our guests'
experience is only the best that can be offered and have an enjoyable time.
Those skaters with their own skates that require sharpening can hand them in to
the cash office. The service is available
from Monday to Thursday and it takes approximately two to three days. The
ticket must be purchased at the cash office at the cost of R50-00.
Our ticket office is open from 10am every morning during the week and closes at
10:30pm Monday to Thursday. Friday from 10:00 until midnight. Saturday from
09:00 until midnight.
Sunday from 11:30 until 20:30.
Skates can be collected from the sharpening room upon completion.
